tort: Private or civil injustice; Failure to perform a prescribed legal or habitual obligation, resulting in harm to others. The victim of a crime may have the right to claim damages to compensate for the damage suffered. Victims of crime may also bring an action in tort (in civil proceedings) for the injustice done to them. (See also Damages.) Custody: The right and responsibility of a parent to make decisions about a child`s health, education and well-being. There are two types of custody orders: joint custody and sole custody. Complainant: A person who wishes to initiate legal proceedings against another person.

In civil proceedings, the plaintiff is the plaintiff. In criminal proceedings, the complainant is the State. Demurrer: When a defendant says that the facts presented by a plaintiff, even if true, are not sufficient to establish or prove the defendant`s legal liability. Appearance: Go to court. Or a legal document stating that you will participate in the trial. Memorandum of Issue: A legal document filed in a civil case indicating that the case is ready to be brought before the courts. (See Memo to set.) Legal parent: A person legally recognized as the parent of a child. Bankruptcy: The legal way for a business or person to get help if they can`t pay the money they owe. In bankruptcy court, they can get rid of their debts by paying some of what they owe. At these hearings, there are special bankruptcy judges.

Arrest: The lawful capture of a person accused of a crime. Long-arm jurisdiction: A legal provision that allows 1 state to claim personal jurisdiction over a person living in another state. There must be a significant connection between the person and the state or district claiming jurisdiction so that the authority of a court or authority can extend beyond its normal jurisdictional limit. a legal decision so important that judges must follow in subsequent cases the established methods of handling cases in the courts Supervised visits: visit between a parent and a child that takes place in the presence of another particular adult. The court may order a supervised visit in cases of domestic violence, child abuse or threat to remove the child from the state. Waiver of Rights Form: A form signed by a defendant and the judge that records the legal rights, if any, that are revoked (or waived) by the defendant.
