Before I get to the heart of the matter, I should clarify my position; That is, I am a turtle lover, not a lawyer, and I cannot offer legal advice on buying and selling turtles and the legislation surrounding such activities. Answer: This law came into force in 1975 during the fear of salmonella concerning young children putting baby turtles in their mouths and contracting the disease. Many see this as an overreaction to a tiny threat — the way the U.S. has repeatedly unleashed itself. The 4-inch turtle law is still in the books of the Food and Drug Administration today. It is often misunderstood and misinterpreted. Anyone with half a brain will quickly point out that turtles larger than 4 inches are not immune to salmonella and that a child does not need to put a turtle in their mouth to catch salmonella. Small populations are found in Autauga and Macon counties, where they have been introduced by humans.
