Alexander Colvin, Ph.D. `99, is Dean Kenneth F. Kahn `69 and Martin F. Scheinman `75, `MS `76 Professor of Conflict Resolution at the ILR School, Cornell University. His research and teaching focus on the resolution of labour disputes, with a particular focus on procedures in non-unionized companies and the impact of the legal environment on organizations. His current research projects include empirical studies on labour arbitration and transnational studies on dispute resolution. He has published articles in journals such as ILR Review, Industrial Relations, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Industrial Relations, Academy of Management Journal, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Empirical Legal Studies and Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution. Roche and P. Teague) and Arbitration Law (f/K. Stone and R. Bales). Dean Colvin received his J.D. from the University of Toronto in 1992 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1999. For his dissertation entitled „Citizens and Citadels: Dispute Resolution and the Governance of Employment Relations”, he received the Outstanding Young Scholar Award from the Industrial Relations Research Association (IRRA) in 2003 and the IRRA Best Thesis Award in 2000. Prior to joining the ILR School faculty in 2008, he taught at Penn State University from 1999 to 2008. Prior to his legal career, Dr. Nie was a Senior Scientist at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical R&D, L.L.C. During his seven years with the company, Dr.

Born in China and native Chinese speaker, Dr. Nie is active in Chinese-American legal practice. Dr. Nie advises multinational companies on technology transfer and M&A transactions with Chinese companies and represents Chinese technology companies in their expansion into the U.S. market. Dr. Nie was a former president and current board member of the Chinese American Lawyers of the Bay Area (CALOBA), a leading association of Chinese lawyers in the United States.
He is a member of BayHelix, a leading Chinese-born organization in the global life sciences and healthcare community. He was also director of the 2013 annual conference of the Hua Yuan Science and Technology Association (HYSTA), the flagship event of Silicon Valley`s most prestigious entrepreneurial organization that connects China and the United States. Previously, Dr. Nie was part of a U.S. delegation that discussed IP enforcement issues with China`s State Council and represented the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), California`s stem cell agency, to negotiate a cooperation agreement with China`s Ministry of Science and Technology. Dr. Nie`s diverse technical experience helps him address patent issues in interdisciplinary technologies such as personalized medicine, pharmacogenomics, biomedical instrumentation (e.g., next-generation sequencing), digital and mobile health, and general computational biology and chemistry. Nie`s multidisciplinary technical experience allows him to advise a wide range of technology companies on patent issues. His technical training includes a PhD in biochemistry, a master`s degree in computer science, and graduate courses in statistics and engineering. Within biotechnology, Dr. Nie focuses on biologics, pharmacy, in vitro diagnostics and stem cell technology. In the high-tech sector, Dr. Nie works with industrial and academic clients in the fields of autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, data mining and data security. Dr. Nie has published 26 peer-reviewed scientific articles and two book chapters. He has received a grant from the NIH and has been a committee member of various scientific organizations, including the International Institute of Life Sciences/Institute of Health and Environmental Sciences (ILSI-HESI), the Critical Path Institute, and the FDA`s Pharmacogenomics Data Standards Committee HL7/CDISC/I3C.
He was President and Guest Speaker at the 2006 Annual Conference of the Drug Information Association (DIA) in Paris. The practice of M. Nie focuses on the global intellectual property (IP) protection strategy and technology transfer issues, including patent acquisition and enforcement, IP valuation and monetization, licensing and technology transfer. Current research projects include an empirical study of labour arbitration and a transnational study of workplace dispute resolution systems in four countries.
